The above is what I got by following the command in #4, executed immediately after problem occurred. This problem for me can be reproduced by: 1. Starting up/restarting computer. 2. At login screen, at the password prompt (i.e. the first text field I come across) turning on the mousepad causes a stream of '=' until a key is pressed. 3. This problem does not occur on subsequent turning on/off of the mousepad, unless the computer is restarted, in which case it will happen only once until another restart etc.
