Hi! The problem affects me too on Lucid (amd64) and the instructions above didn't solve my microphone problem. So I searched at the ALSA bugtracker https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/alsa-bug/my_view_page.php and found a solution. => Bug No. 5130
First of course install linux-backports-modules-alsa-lucid-generic (and restart), after that use kmix to unmute all channels, both capture channels switched to record and both input sources to Mic. (under mixer "HDA Intel") Then go to the second mixer tab of kmix "HD-Audio Generic" and *mute* IEC958 (also called 5.1 Smart), that does the trick. (You can also use alsamixer, ...) The "HD-Audio Generic" 5.1 Smart Channel IEC958 is a wrong detection of the hda-intel driver, so the mic and other channels will be relinked to the wrong place. (further details in the ALSA bugtracker). Front mic + speaker are also working => make sure that the front channel is not muted and Input Source 2 switched to Front Mic.
