  I first tried to install Ubuntu 10.10 using Ubiquity to an external hard
  drive. The install failed (in particular the bootloader installation)
  and when I tried to run Ubiquity again (installing this time to the main
  SSD), before I even get to the partition manager, this crash occurs.
