I'm not exactly sure what causes this problem - Colin knows but he is a very very busy man. Since there are over 300 crasher bugs that are still to be resolved, it would seem like a normal priority bug.
In the meantime, your safest bet would be the "Install CD" (see http://releases.ubuntu.com/edubuntu/6.06/ - you probably want edubuntu-6.06-install-powerpc.iso ). The installer is the same in Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Edubuntu/Xubuntu etc., so trying Ubuntu is unlikely to solve the problem.
