Was sound working for you prior to your upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04? Have you installed any packages or software from anywhere else, either a PPA on Launchpad, or another website?
Try updating your audio drivers, as outlined here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/InstallingLinuxAlsaDriverModules.
