According to your mixer levels, the capture mixer element is turned down
completely. Try going into alsamixer, switching to the capture controls
by pressing F4, and adjust the capture control there. Also make sure the
Mic control is selected as the capture device, by pressing the spacebar.
You shoud see a red CAPTURE word appear underh the volume display.
