Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: smartmontools

Smartmontools 5.36 can't handle SATA devices automatically. You have to
disable the DEVICESCAN option and manually add device entries in the
config file. Version 5.37 does not have this problem, it supports libata
SATA devices out of the box.

To fix the problem on smartmontools 5.36 you have to comment the
DEVICESCAN option and add entries like this:

/dev/sda -a -d ata -s on

for every sata disc.

** Affects: smartmontools (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: Unconfirmed
