I'm also having the same trouble with my 1.8 GHz MacBook (first revision - not core 2 duo). My screen turns off (not just the backlight - the display completely turns off), and the fan slowly spins down (it is still powered, because I can hear it stop if I manually turn off the power by holding the power key), and the little light does not come on. It does not respond to any attempt to wake it. I have to turn it off and then boot it again.
