So I reinstalled Ubuntu. It had working sound during the install but didn't have sound after the install this time (it did before). As I said before, I have two soundcards, one onboard and one in a PCI slot. I use the PCI soundcard and don't have anything plugged in to the onboard one. I decided to go into my BIOS and totally disable the onboard one altogether. After I did this, the sound now always works, as opposed to working off and on.
