I ran Memtest from the SystemRescueCD, version 1.6.1, and it showed no errors in the RAM. The S.M.A.R.T. self-tests of my main hard drive all completed OK. My (external) USB hard drive that I had mentioned before does not support S.M.A.R.T. If there's a hardware problem, it is not revealed by these results.
