desktopcouch doesn't fire up the process that requires the user to
interact with the ubuntu-sso-login process.  If you have authenticated
with Ubuntu One for file synchronization on this computer, then
desktopcouch will use those credentials.

So the workaround is to set up file synchronization, and you also get
database synchronization thereafter.
