I removed the /var/lib/gdm/.pulse* but while logged into KDE there were no gdm
owned pulse-related processes that I could see.
Having logged out however, there were a total of 4 pulseaudio processes:

dg 2486 1 0 12:18 ? 00:00:00 /usr/bin/pulseaudio --start
--log-target=syslog
dg 2660 2486 0 12:18 ? 00:00:00
/usr/lib/pulseaudio/pulse/gconf-helper
gdm 12011 1 6 12:57 ? 00:00:02 /usr/bin/pulseaudio --start
--log-target=syslog
gdm 12030 12011 0 12:57 ? 00:00:00
/usr/lib/pulseaudio/pulse/gconf-helper

I killed both sets of those off and when I logged into gnome audio was
working.
