Public bug reported:

I launched ubuntu tryout from CD-ROM drive, tried to run system tests
from System > Administration menu, initial sound playback test worked
correctly, then I skipped the earphone tests, then in internal
microphone test, after speaking for a while there was no sound playback:
I then tried the sound recorder application, and that was not working. I
then changed the internal audio input volume to the max 100% level, and
the test worked fine. Hence I think the system is setting the default
input level to a too low level which means no sound will be recorded
unless the user changes the input level
