I've also an SL510 by Lenovo running 10.10 and I can confirm this
problem.
If you're pressing the mute-button and afterwards the volume-up or
volume-down-button, the sound gets muted.
But the light don't flashs like in Ubuntu 10.04.
If you are only pressing the mute-button, nothing happens.
