Hi, I reproduced the problem this morning.
So, for question 1 : I can confirm that the device does not work when this 
error occurs. The network device usb0 exists, and has the correct IP address 
192.168.0.200 (which indicates that NetworkManager detected correctly the MAC 
Address of the FreeRunner), but the IP address of the FreeRunner 
(192.168.0.202) is not pingable : 100% packet loss

For question 2, you will find in the attchment file the log lines in
/var/log/messages (a few seconds before and a few seconds after)

My FreeRunner will stay plugged in this state for the next 2 hours, but
I'll have to disconnect it after (after all, this is my cell phone ;-)
). In the mean time, I might run more tests if you wish.

Please tell me if I can install the normal kernel of Lucid back, or if I
should install the one from Maverick
