Hi,

the probability is significantly higher when writing to both tape drives in 
parallel.
When writing to only one drive there is a good chance to get it done correctly.

By the way I use mbuffer and a lot of memory for the backup process:

normally both in parallel:
RAID6 -> XFS -> tar -> mbuffer1 (12GB RAM) -> tape drive1 (LTO-3)
RAID6 -> XFS -> tar -> mbuffer2 (12GB RAM) -> tape drive2 (LTO-3)
