I believe it's actually a race condition with encrypted home folders. I've rebooted 10 times since and *one* time I had the correct theme. Does Gnome maybe try to read my config before my home is fully mounted? What's odd is that I still can't go to Appearances and change it to Ambiance.
** Summary changed: - Gnome theme changes from Ambiance to plain default after first reboot, can't be changed back. + Race condition between encrypted-home and Gnome theme (?) ** Description changed: I just installed Maverick 10.10 AMD64 Desktop. After the first boot everything looked great. I then setup my typical environment, which basically includes installing a bunch of packages. I didn't change any Appearance options at all. After rebooting, my theme is now a very boring and ugly one (I believe the Gnome default). I cannot change it back to Ambiance in Appearance - settings. If I create a new non-admin user, he has Ambiance. If I - create an admin user, he has the crappy theme. + settings. If I create a new user, he has Ambiance. If I login to my + user, he has the crappy theme. + + Update: I've had Ambiance load once in 10 reboots, see comment below, + the only thing I can think of is that I use encrypted home. I'd be happy to provide more information or try anything to make my desktop less ugly.
