I apologize, I have since done a backup and clean installation with 10.10...
To answer your question, when I originally posted the bug I did not edit the preferences for the application in the menu. I dropped to a shell and ran sudo synaptic, which had no issues. It appeared that gksu was the culprit... -- James P.
