I'm affected by this bug too. I'm using Sony model vpcs11c5e.

With 10.04 everything was good. After the update to 10.10 the microphone
is broken.

After the update i see in /var/log/messages :

I added snd-hda-intel model=laptop-amic to alsa-base.conf. After that the 
external mic. works.
"events suppressed" and "MCP power or thermal limit exceeded" messages are 
still there.
