I would experience something similar when dual booting between XP and Karmic. If I was using XP and if the computer went into hibernation, and then I booted Karmic, the ethernet card would be unresponsive and would not establish an Internet connection. To resolve this, I would to restart into XP and shutdown XP correctly and completely, then boot into Karmic in order to use the ethernet card.
