I have the same issue on a Kubuntu 10.10 fresh install. And I have open a system monitor, and few seconds before the freeze, the process ksoftirqd/0 use more cpu, from 65% to 100%..., and this also without other software run, only a kppp (the card is not recognised from the network manager) connection.
