Update:

Following Daniel Chen's advice to install the LinuxAlsaDriverModules for
kernel 2.6.35-22 from

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/InstallingLinuxAlsaDriverModules

sound is now working ... except for the login drum roll and opening
music.

Skype opening sound works, midi files start with a hiss but then play
OK, mp3 and ogg files play perfectly.

Strangely, sound in kernel 2.6.32-25, which worked flawlessly before
installing the AlsaDriverModule for kernel 2.6.35-22, now also will not
play the login sounds.

@Nitesh - the information you requested was sent; I cannot see it
appended so I do not know where it went. Do you want it resubmitted?
