Based upon further troubleshooting and research it appears this problem
may be an AMI BIOS issue. Although these are relatively new machines, I
downloaded the latest AMI BIOS (061214s.ROM) for the motherboard from
the manufacturer's website. I flashed the BIOS and then repeated the
steps that previously resulted in the CMOS becoming corrupted: Boot
Ubuntu Live CD, then reboot into Win XP. With the new BIOS, the CMOS did
not become corrupted and networking functions properly in both Ubuntu
and Win XP.

So, the resolution for anyone with this problem is to flash the BIOS to
the latest version and clear CMOS.
