I have the same hardware and the same problem with ubuntu and debian. Mine is a Green iMac G3 400MHz DV firewire .
I'm running 2.6.18-4-powerpc with alsa-base 1.0.13-5 on debian 4.0 currently, but experienced the same issue with ubuntu 6.06 My amixer output in case it's still of use follows: The mixer channel labelled "PC Speaker" is the one that actually controls the volume, which is suspicious when you think about the sound quality.
