No luck - still no sound

In alsamixer located SPDIF Optical raw (no IEC958 reference anywhere). By
default it was off.
Bounced mute back and forth several times. Each time tested with speaker-test
Dplug:front -c2 and a
wav file through the default player. Never a sound.

As an aside, looked at the BIOS at boot time and there is integrated audio but
per the BIOS it is
off.

Thanks
