Patrick, Your gnome-terminal and gnome-system-monitor problems are unrelated to wdm. In fact I'm typing this from a WDM login on a thin client to a gnome session and both gnome-terminal and gnome-system-monitor start up just fine. I suggest you bring up an Xterm (ALT-F2, xterm, enter) and run them from a cli to see what the error is or check your .xsession- errors file.
