I have the same problem after upgrading Ubuntu 10.04 to the released
version of 10.10. My 40_custom file looks like:

#!/bin/sh
exec tail -n +3 $0
# This file provides an easy way to add custom menu entries.  Simply type the
# menu entries you want to add after this comment.  Be careful not to change
# the 'exec tail' line above.
menuentry "FreeBSD 8.1" {
      set root=(hd0,3,a)
      chainloader +1
      boot
}

This worked well under Ubuntu 10.04 (for both FreeBSD 8.0 and 8.1 - I
just upgraded to 8.1 last month. But it no longer works under Maverick
10.10.
