After following the suggested fix for Bug 23251, gsynaptics refuses to start with a message about SHMConfig (it does solve that particular issue though). The touchpad tab also disappeared from gnome-mouse- properties. This is what I would expect before the fix if gsynaptics is not going to work/speak the right protocol.
