I have sound in Ubuntu. There comes a time when should do what you're not supposed to do. I enabled the onboard sound system AND left the SB Audigy enabled in the system.
Ubuntu recognized both sound systems so by using the sound tool, I just told it to use the onboard one. Plugged in the speakers and it worked. Booted to the Windows partition, put the speakers back on Audigy and Windows worked. It too recognized the onboard sound but stayed with Audigy. This process was tested by various reboots and power downs. There was one instance of the reboot freezing but going in and out of the BIOS seemed to clear this. So this a 75% solution. I get sound in Linux but only from onboard sound, not the better Audigy. I still have Windows sound but I have to play speaker games and plug them in the right source. This is not a big problem for this particular PC but the backs of boxes are not always easily accessible. The problem generally remains as to why this happens. Ubuntu recognizes the sound systems but can't use Audigy. Is this a software problem in general or is this something that is unique to Dell 8400. Or is there something special about my particular system. It would be interesting to know how wide spread this problem is. I'm functioning now but some work needs to be done. Thanks for your attention. At least this specific problem is resolved.
