I have a similar problem (high CPU usage by pulseaudio), but under different circumstances. Whenever I ran or run a VM with VirtualBox, the CPU can later suddenly spike to consume one entire core. I also have Pidgin running in the background which plays sounds when people log on or talk to me. Pidgin uses Gstreamer as backend for audio, but VB doesn't. Since I run both, I haven't pinpointed it to one of the other, or a combination, but I often see a buddy sign on without hearing any sound. The internet radio that Audacious is playing sometimes crackles or hickups when someone signs on or talks to me.
The CPU returns to normal when I stop all audio systems and connections to PA and wait a few seconds, then start the audio again. I'm not killing the process or anything, though it might actually happen behind the scenes.
