Hi, I can add the following information: the dock browses recursively the URI trash:/ and gets the size of each file, using g_file_enumerate_children with G_FILE_QUERY_INFO_NOFOLLOW_SYMLINKS.
I've personnally noticed that the whole process takes a lot of time when there are a lot of files, whereas the more basic method (using fopen and fstat) is much faster and gives the same result (I don't have network volumes).
