Thanks for the response, I created a new user and the audio is working
perfect now, the mic is also working.  Some how when I install compiz in
xubuntu 10.10 it killed the audio or I may have done something wrong.
Couldn't get the audio back up by following forums and googling, created a
new user fix it.
