Same problem for me with same error message.

DistroRelease: Ubuntu maverick upgraded from lucid.
Package: evince 2.32.0-0ubuntu1
Uname:2.6.35-22-generic x86_64

If i try to open a pdf from command line, as suggested by Pedro
Villavicencio, i get these warnings and the file fails to open:

resources file at `/home/vanbosco/.recently-used.xbel', but the parser
failed: Errore nel leggere il file "/home/vanbosco/.recently-used.xbel":

If i try to open the same file with okular from command line or in the regular
way, it works with no errors.
