Hi. I've been fine tuning my touchpad as well. I've not seen your
trouble, but can tell you some diagnostic steps. I believe, in the end,
you will find this is not a touchpad problem, but a keyboard/mouse
button problem.
I wonder if you do System-Preferences->Mouse and change from left to right
handed buttons, does it have an effect?
The touchpad program synclient can list, monitor, or set touchpad
values. Run it in a terminal. In -m monitor mode, note i hit the left
and right buttons and 1 appears for l and r. the other lines are from me
twitcing and hitting the touchpad as well.
$ synclient -m 200

Your description leads me to suspect you just see 1 under "l" when you
hit either key?
You can run "synclient -l" to dump out all settings, but where it says
"Button" in there, it means tap emulation on the pad.
In launchpad, I find several other bugs that sound similar to yours, but
as I read them over and over, I think, when they say "button" they mean
touchpad corner taps and such, not the actual mouse-like button hardware
on the laptop.

I think your settings have to be in the mouse button controls. The
fixes in here are more likely to apply to your case.
