I can confirm this bug is duplicated by bug 656192 which I reported. In answer to the question from Alexander van Loon, yes it is related to desktop effects - just turned them OFF* and my calendar now sits neatly just above the clock and not half off the screen.. *Ubuntu Menu/System/Preferences/Appearance/Visual Effects
