People think of it as a configuration file, but it is rather a script. I
think that could be the "gotcha".

Ok, but could you then explain where you would look, and what the text
would look like to give you that information? It would be good for me to
know where users are looking for information.

Hmm, I'm not an expert in that area, but I think running "sudo apt-get"
with the --fix-broken flag, e g "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade --fix-broken"
might help. Or it might tell you what's wrong and what to do about it.
