Sorry for the delay getting back to you on this. I've attached the log. For some reason the .deb file you provided for the headers wouldn't install, either the i386 or all version, so I couldn't get GDM to run as I couldn't recompile the drivers module for my graphics card. I did everything you asked from recovery mode though, so I hope it still provides the same thing.
I'm running Maverick now, so if it needs to be run on Lucid then I could do it again on a live CD session.
