I confirm that once the fix in #2 is applied only internal microphone works, but there is no way to use an external microphone. Indeed the two audio minijack 3.5mm ports of dell m4500 are both working as "output" (even if one of the two is marked as microphone). I tried to install gnome-alsa-mixer and to play with many combinations of headphone and microphone settings but I found no way to use the 3.5mm port marked as "mic in" as microphone input, it always works as output.
