10.10 is much worse than 10.4 ever was. Until you fixed the problem in 10.4 I used the script: xrandr --output default --mode 1024x768 and that fixed things for me. Now on 10.10 the script generates a fault, as 1024x768 is rejected by the new driver. After a boot, I can only login (after the first failure) in "safe mode". That mode does not display the internet connection and will not allow me to run update manager.
