Running "sudo halt -n" caused something to completely unhinge my PC and I've spent the last few days fixing it using live CDs to recover my data and reverting to Lucid Lynx.
Thanks for trying to help but I'm going to give 10.10 a miss as whatever I do, it doesn't seem stable on my PC. Sorry I can't help to pinpoint the problem but I've spent too much time simply trying to get back to where I was before upgrading. Please mark this as complete or solved or remove this bug notification as I won't be providing more information (unless something goes wrong with 10.04.1).
