This crash is in core kernel code, which is unlikely to exhibit such a
serious bug.

The most likely cause is corrupted memory caused by other drivers.  In
the light of that, your initial comment that it happened shortly after
enabling desk-top effects may be significant.  Alternatively, the fact
it occurred during scp may indicate a network driver issue.

These bugs are extremely difficult to track down.  Can you confirm it
only occurs with 'desktop effects'?

Please attach the files generated by the following commands:

dmesg > dmesg.txt
lspci -nnvv > lspci.txt
lsmod > lsmod.txt

A small possibility exists that you may have bad memory.  Can you run a
memory test to rule this out.
