Less simple but less abrasive workaround to try before purging.

edit /var/lib/dpkg/info/kdm.postrm and comment out the following three
lines since they're apparently unnecessary:

if [ "$1" = "purge" ] ; then
        rm /etc/init/kdm.conf || exit $?
fi

-- 
package kdm (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed 
post-removal script returned error exit status 1
