The minimal install works but does not install a desktop. (gnome, XCFE,
KDE,&c)

I bit the bullet, installed fresh 10.04 and did a distribution upgrade. To do
a distribution upgrade…
⋯(1) Install 10.04 LTS, (which worked with my GT240 in graphical mode)
⋯(2) Use update manager to fully update 10.04 LTS
⋯(3) in "Software Sources", Updates TAB > Change Release upgrade/Show new
distribution releases: from "Longterm support releases only" to "Normal
Releases" (it's at the bottom of the window)
⋯(4) Now in Upgrade manger, there will be a new option "New Ubuntu release
'10.10' is available with a button. Pressing this button will start the
distribution upgrade. You may have to press the "Check" button to see it.

For best results, fully update 10.04 before starting the distribution
upgrade, and allow a lot of time for each.

This method worked for me but is was time consuming.

Since I was doing mythbuntu with the gnome desktop, I installed 10.04,
then used the myth control center to add the Ubuntu Desktop as step (1)
and was pleased with the result. Since I was using a Hauggauge 2250, I
also installed the drivers under 10.04 ()before the distribution
upgrade.
