Using Maverick.
empathy is launched from the messaging menu, and an empathy icon appears
in the launcher panel.
I right-click on the icon, and select the "quit" option. The contact
list and any open chat windows go away, but empathy does not actually
quit. I am still logged in, and the "me" indicator shows that I am still
available.
In order to actually quit empathy, I have to re-open the contact list
and hit control-q or select File -> Quit.
