I recently installed a fresh clean copy of 10.10 on my laptop and to my dismay the crackle was still present at start-up. I ran the update manager, reboot and still had no success. I tried following the above instructions to install the alsa-driver I used to have 8.10 (I think) and I never had this problem. I do not know why it would arise now. Could it have something to do with the fact I choose to install inside windows, as apposed to partitioning my hard drive and installing it the old fashioned way? The speaker crackle happens right as the Ubuntu splash screen with the flashing dots appears, on startup.
