You installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, which includes grub2 by default, but
have manually downgraded to grub1 without configuring it.  Either you
need to configure grub1 by hand to be your bootloader so you can upgrade
kernels, or you should reinstall grub2 by running this command: 'sudo
apt-get install grub-pc'.
