When I didn't get a reply to the above, I opened a "question" ticket at https://answers.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/127856. I also tracked down the ModemManager developers at http://www.betavine.net . After a few exchanges, I managed to fix the problem myself, and Nicholas @ Betavine asked me to sum up my findings in a Wiki. Assuming I don't finally figure out this whole mess myself, I'm sure some Linux-friendly people from Nokia will have an answer for you.
