I came from Red Hat and variants in which runlevel 3 doesn't start X
from init. So I was, and I know I shouldn't, assuming that Ubuntu/Debian
would be the same as far as that goes. I was editing the grub entry
before booting to start in runlevel 3 and during the editing I also
removed the splash and quiet options. Maybe I'm just getting lucky and
one of them is causing the blank screen. The xorg.conf problems were two
different issues. I tried installing the NVIDIA driver manually and also
had the kernel-restricted-modules package installed which seems to cause
a conflict. For some reason the kernel thinks at bootup that it will be
loading the 7184 (legacy) NVIDIA driver and when it finds the new 9755
driver it crashes X. This I corrected by removing the restricted-modules
package and then it worked, but my resolution wasn't what I wanted. So I
manually edited the modes in my xorg.conf file and forgot a set of
quotation marks which gave me the second X crash. If I can provide any
other details please let me know.

Mike
