I had the same error message. This is what happened:
I use Ubuntu 10.04 as a Wubi installation. I decided to change the OS boot up option to Ubuntu. I did some research and changed the OS boot up option in Windows Vista to Ubuntu. I then rebooted and started up in Ubuntu.
