I hit this too after cheese (reasonably) crashed because my machine was out of ram. I ran cheese under strace to see what it was doing around the "does not match" error, and I found it was talking to some thumbnail service. Running "nautilus ~/.thumbnails" to force a proper thumbnail of every pic in the directory seems to have fixed it. (I also tried moving .thumbnails to a different name and then back again, so possibly something else I did was the actual fix.)
